Researchers Wanted
 
I have recently joined the University of Derby as Enterprise Development Fellow and will be chairing a proposed new Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Management Research Group within the Derbyshire Business School.
 
Our research will seek insights into Entrepreneurship and Enterprise and will particularly address issues that have come to the fore in the current economic climate:
 
• Barriers to entrepreneurship. We want to better understand, and find ways to reduce, the negative effects of social, cultural, psychological, financial, regulatory, bureaucratic and institutional barriers to entrepreneurship.
• Necessity entrepreneurship.  How can society support jobless people into self employment?  Or the many skilled people who will be transitioning from public sector employment into self-employment in the UK?
• Supporting Teaching.  As we move to becoming a more enterprising society, how can Entrepreneurship and Enterprise skills be taught more effectively?  We want to generate insights and case studies for teaching and develop methods to measure and improve the effectiveness of programmes and courses.
• Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation.  Finding better ways of delivering public services and operating as a society.  Can David Cameron’s Big Society fill the gap left by big cuts to government department budgets?
 
These all seem vital issues and we want to conduct research that makes a contribution that is relevant, useful, timely and practice-based.  I welcome suggestions.
 
I would also like to hear from anyone interested in being associated with our new group.  This could be as:

• PhD student – we have one vacancy.
• Student - MSc in Business and Enterprise Management
• Practitioners (Richard Branson visited us recently)
 
We have just moved into the University of Derby’s new Enterprise Centre, a £8m complex with state-of-the-art conferencing and meeting facilities.  We operate business incubators at four sites and run a number of programmes for entrepreneurs and businesses, including the Ingenuity programme which also involves the Universities of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent.
 
I am particularly keen to form links with colleagues in Europe, Australia and of course my homeland of New Zealand.  Our data resources include our students, programme participants and the various networks, clusters and cohorts of entrepreneurs with whom we work.
 
We promise enthusiastic collaboration and a warm welcome to visitors at our Enterprise Centre in Derby.
