University of Amsterdam

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is a university with an internationally acclaimed profile, located at the heart of the Dutch capital. As well as a world centre for business and research, Amsterdam is a hub of cultural and media activities. The UvA is a member of the League of European Research Universities.

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) conducts international research in the fields of accounting, finance, management, economics and econometrics. It also provides academic courses in these areas. The UvA Business School and the UvA School of Economics form part of the FEB. The UvA School of Economics and the Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship currently have the following joint vacancy:

Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship
full-time
vacancy number 09-5028

The successful applicant will undertake and help coordinate research and teaching in the field of entrepreneurship. The UvA School of Economics (ASE) is among the top economics research institutes in Europe. The most recent ranking by the Journal of the European Economic Association puts the ASE in the top 10. The School fosters a stimulating academic climate.

Researchers at the Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE) currently publish on, for example, the determinants of entrepreneurial activity and performance. ACE has a strong interest in high-quality academic research, either from a business or an economics perspective. Moreover, it actively disseminates research results to politicians, policy makers, and large and small businesses. The research is part of the larger Human Capital Group, which holds a prominent research position within Europe and actively participates in the research activities of the Tinbergen Institute. It emphasizes a quantitative and analytical approach.

ACE members are also involved in teaching at both the undergraduate (BSc) and the graduate (MSc) level. The field of entrepreneurship is well embedded in the overall economics and business curriculum, one of the main tracks students can specialize in. ACE recently received a large grant from the Ministry of Economic Affairs. New and innovative education programmes throughout the UvA are being designed and implemented in collaboration with other institutes of higher education, the public sector and businesses in Amsterdam.

Tasks

The appointee will conduct research within the field of entrepreneurship, from either a business or an economics perspective. His or her research should reflect a clear quantitative and analytical orientation, and preferably (given the current composition of the group and its research activities) be empirical in nature. Moreover, the appointee should be capable of teaching at the different levels in the programme and on various topics within the field of entrepreneurship. The teaching at ACE ranges from very academic to highly practical (students start up new ventures).

Requirements

A PhD in Economics and/or Business, the proven ability to initiate and implement research of international standard, the ability to stimulate and encourage the research of others, demonstrated teaching and organizational competences, and the ability to teach in English. Short-listed candidates will be asked to give an academic seminar.
