Horizon is a Digital Economy Research Institute that focuses on the role of 'always-on always with you' ubiquitous computing in the Digital Economy. It promises to transform the ways in which we work, shop, travel, learn, socialise and play. We are exploring new uses of ubiquitous computing; creating new context-aware technologies; understanding privacy, information security and regulatory issues; creating new business models; and studying the impact on people's lives. This involves working across a variety of domains, especially the creative industries and transportation. Further information about Horizon is available at: http://www.horizon.ac.uk.

To address these challenges Horizon brings together an interdisciplinary team from across the university with expertise from a wide variety of backgrounds besides computer science, including: engineering, psychology, business, the geospatial sciences, sociology, social science and the arts. The digital economy raises significant challenges for companies and organisations in order to respond to the opportunities created by entrenched structural change in industrial structure. This research investigates novel approaches for economic factors within the digital economy to address these areas. Research activities will revolve around the following areas: service innovation and the development of appropriate business models for the emerging digital economy. The research will be done in conjunction with Horizon's research partners and address real-life questions faced by companies within this domain and will be both qualitative and quantitatively based.

Candidates should have a Masters degree or equivalent in a relevant area (e.g. Economics or Business), as well as an in-depth knowledge of the research area.
