SPECIAL ISSUE
On
The Development of Entrepreneurship under Difficult/Extreme Conditions

Environment plays a crucial role in forming and developing entrepreneurship and relevant activities. Most of the empirical evidences on entrepreneurial development come from developed economies. In order to make a firm more competitive and stimulate the entrepreneurship, the academics and researchers should focus more upon the difficult/extreme conditions that bar the usual growth of entrepreneurial activities. In these context transitional economies such as developing and war-affected countries provide a unique social setting considered difficult/extreme condition for testing different hypothesis (Meyer and Peng, 2005).

Entrepreneurship in transition economies is developed under distinctive circumstances (Aidis, 2005; Smallbone and Welter, 2009), frequently implying difficult conditions in terms of severe barriers to entry and growth of the firm. Therefore, under these conditions the growth of a firm is difficult to a great extent. Besides, in some parts of the world, entrepreneurship is considered as against the law operation, where private initiative is strictly forbidden. In this kind of environment entrepreneurial ventures emerges as illegal activity (Aidis and van Praag, 2006).

In addition, we are also interested to know more on how entrepreneurship develops during and after the war times and how social and political turbulence influences the entrepreneurial activities. We have witnessed that despite of war destructions, people find ways to explore and create opportunities for economic activities. However, they face unique barriers to do business certainly in unfavourable situation.

The purpose of this issue is to bring rather different perspective on entrepreneurship, taking into account difficult/extreme condition for entrepreneurship; hence researcher, policymakers, practitioners, as well as PhD students are invited to submit empirical papers, theoretical contributions, and case studies. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

. The role of institutions and entrepreneurship in transition economies
. The development of entrepreneurship in post war countries/societies
. Entrepreneurial behaviour under difficult conditions (natural catastrophe, communism)
. Fast growing firms in transition economies
. Female entrepreneurial activity under difficult/extreme conditions
. Entrepreneurship development under Islamic rules
. The relationship between extreme environment and the growth of the firm
. Financing aspects of small firm development and growth
. Innovation behaviour of SMEs in transition economies
