International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business (IJESB)
Special Issue on: "Marketing in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises"
Guest Editor: Dr Kevin Voges, University of Canterbury, New Zealand
Deadline: 31 January 2006

Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) comprise a significant
proportion of most economies, making an important contribution to a
country's economic growth. Whilst criteria for what constitutes a SME
vary from one country to another, by most measures they account for
between 80% and 95% of the number of businesses making up the economy.
SMEs also account for a disproportionate share of job creation. SMEs
have many characteristics that distinguish them from large firms. They
are less bureaucratic and more flexible then large firms, but the
absence of functional specialists means they often perform their
business activities with less expertise. They are often confined to
niche markets that are not served by large firms. Despite the widespread
occurrence of SMEs, when issues and techniques in marketing are
considered, the focus is often on large businesses, with specialized
marketing departments and substantial marketing budgets. Much research
in marketing (with one or two notable exceptions), assumes that the
domain of interest is a large organization. In addition, marketing
considerations are often overlooked or underemphasized by entrepreneurs,
especially when initially establishing their enterprises. This Special
Issue aims to address these biases, by focusing its attention on
marketing issues within Small and Medium Sized Enterprises. The Special
Issue is due for publication in late 2006.
